I'm going to have a good look through the links. Are there any plans from start to end? I can sort the seat and frame but it's the motion I'll struggle with.

Hi All, posting from Brisbane, Australia here. I was quite surprised to see so many Aussies on here :). I am in the jaw dropped stage of "you can really make this yourself" these marvellous contraptions. Initially I was looking at commercial systems but after seeing prices of $5k, $10K, $20K and beyond I started to get a little dismayed (especially as what I really liked the look of was in the $20K+ range). I have lots of reading and learning to do before I embark on this and am currently planning a build of an arcade cabinet, the great news is my significant other has given me the green light after I complete the arcade cabinet. So that allows me a few months of planning before purchasing or attempting to build. My background is in IT so not a great deal of crossover here, but, I am sure I can pick up the required skills with practice.

Sorry for the long winded introduction, I hope to be a pest to you all in the coming months and hopefully learn enough to help others :)

Welcome @ParityClaws, nice to see another Aussie compatriot join the motion sim fold.

A few months planning is time well spent, and the community here can help you out as you formulate your ideas about what you want to build.

Have a look at existing member builds, that may help you refine your own project: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

You will find plenty to get you started in the FAQs, from design software, dimension of sims, to PSUs, pots, motors, JRKs, Arduinos and Motor Monsters and more: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/

We have a glossary for all those acronyms we tend to use, which will help you decipher some descriptions: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/glossary-of-acronyms-and-names.66/

When you are ready please start your own project thread here: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

Feel free to ask questions, the members here give freely of both their time and expertise.

    Good luck with your project.

@crammy , my advice is do the home work but decide on what you like as far as design. this will dictate the path you follow as far as motion. then we go from there. we won't "leave you hangin'".

    Hello!

I'm trying to help a good friend improve a couple of simulators that he acquired a few years back from an inventor in Los Angeles.

I've worked with motion simulators before, but regrettably never learned much about their programming and operation. I'm hoping to take advantage of this opportunity and begin to learn more about simulators and robotics in general. This site looks to be an amazing resource!

Anyway, these machines seem to be a unique approach to fudging 6DOF. They consist of only three pneumatic cylinders and manipulate the seat from the rear. The largest cylinder pushes/rotates the seat up and down (although not perfectly vertically) while the two smaller cylinders push and pull on a sprocket to swing the seat from side to side. The riders actually "hang" in the seat, which remains at least 3 feet above the ground. (I'll post some renderings and a video when I can).

These simulators boast a proprietary control program and motion control board, but I'm hoping that we can figure out how to change these out for some Arduinos and either use SimTools or a custom-programmed interface to help us move toward full-blown VR. See, he's currently running some Vuzix 3D HMDs with simple mpeg movies and pre-programmed motion. These are fun enough, but I'd like to begin developing rides via Unity 3D, that can be selected and started by the rider (using a HUD cursor) where the telemetry data is pulled real-time from the application, rather than from stored, pre-programmed .dat files, as it is now. This seems to be precisely what SimTools was designed for, so I just need to figure out how to adapt it!

    Some immediate questions:
    • Can SimTools work with virtually any hardware control platform? The boards for these machines were custom-built to match the software (or vice versa) but I know nothing more than that.
    • If not, can Arduinos work with virtually any potentiometer? Each chair is currently equipped with two "MIL Spec" rotary sensors from PEC.
    • Can SimTools work with demos produced with Unity3D? I've found plugins in the Asset Store that export telemetry data, but my ignorance with programming leaves me wondering exactly what is and is not cross-compatible in software.
Thanks for any tips, I look forward to becoming an active member of the community!

(And just in case anyone is concerned: my friend does own the rights to these machines - hardware and software - and has been given permission to backward engineer or adapt any of their components to suit his needs. If things pan-out, we will be inquiring about a commercial license for SimTools.)

    Hi All,

Brand new to this community. I found it after failing to get my circa 2000 Frex SimConBase working properly in my new Windows 8 rig.

I've checked MasterYoda's Frex conversion thread and gone ahead and ordered the Devantech USB->RS485 serial adapters. Many of the diagram images in that tutorial seem broken in my browser, so I'm hoping I can figure it out! Wish me luck and any words of advice or encouragement are appreciated!

p.s. that is my Lola-Caterham prototype in my avatar. I use my sim to stay sharp in between track events!
