Hey, new member here Liverpool UK nice to meet you all.
No idea what type of simulator I would like to build, probably start with 2 dof just to ease into it. Not even sure where to start. I bought an Arduino uno with all the bits and pieces a few motors etc, and to be honest at this point I'd just like to learn how to hook one tiny motor up and have it give feedback from a game so that I can just see how it all works before I start building things :)
Thanks to you all for sharing your knowledge and ideas :)

    Hello,

I recently bought an Oculus Rift and have started playing Elite Dangerous.
I was chatting with some friends about how immersive it is and thought the only thing that could make it more immersive is if I made my chair moved with the game.
After a bit of googling, I thought this may actually be possible and I found myself here!

I don't know how to do a lot of this stuff but I plan on learning some new skills along the way.
I've started identifying some steps for a rough plan and I'll outline those in a project post, as recommended.

Hi - Newbie from Devon, UK here.

Just started looking at 'off the shelf' rigs and was considering Vesaro, but now after finding this forum, I might be also considering NJ Motion or Pro-simu given their positive reviews and more economical costs, although Im not sure how Brexit may affect this in coming months!

The reason for an 'off the shelf' is my head spinning trying to decide what I require. Ive basically boiled it down to full motion rig, DD wheel, Heusinkveld pedals, 3 screen monitor and VR.

Any suggestions for a decent set-up much appreciated along with specifications for a PC build.

    Thanks in advance. .

    Welcome @wda24729.

I see you have started a separate thread with your questions, which is good, as the Welcome thread is not really for project/purchase discussions.

It is a significant investment, so a bit of research is time well spent.

Hello everyone, Mike here from Kentucky, USA. I am new to the forum, and am just starting work on my own rig. I have been playing racing games since the Atari 2600 days and can't get enough. I race IRL when I get the chance as well. I write embedded code and can weld, so I am hoping to get something up and going as soon as I can come up with some ideas. I know I want a 3DOF, upgradeable to 5/6DOF someday when I hit the lottery :). I hope to be integrating real automotive dashboard/automotive gauges and warning lights (which I luckily have a large stash of). I just got a Fanatec pedal/wheel/shifter setup for Christmas and need to put it to work.

Thanks for the forum and I will keep reading and get a build thread going soon. So far, I am overwhelmed on here and am trying to figure out where to start.

    Hi,

I've been planning to build a motion simulator chair, mainly for space/flying games, but wouldn't be averse to a bit of racing if the simulation is convincing. I had costed out a design using industrial linear actuators, but found it vastly too expensive.

I just stumbled across the forum during some idle browsing (thanks Reddit), and after some lurking am ready to begin preliminary design of the project. Because I'd like the thing to be small, but with lots of capability, I'm thinking of some sort of compact stewart platform design, likely using wiper, wheelchair or similar 12V motors.

I think I'll start by constructing one of speedy's elegant HPMC drivers and practicing motor control. Looking forward to an expensive and interesting new hobby.

Hi everyone! I was pointed in this direction from a Steam discussion board on adding motion telemetry to a Mars driving simulator that I wrote. I don't currently have a motion simulator but would love to try my stuff on one, so looking to soak up as much info as possible on how to make it motion-sim friendly. I'm more artist than programmer, so any and all tech help is appreciated :)

    Welcome @mahalobay.

Here is a starting guide for devs using Unity and UE4: https://www.xsimulator.net/communit...ry-output-into-a-game-unity-and-ue4-code.287/

The easiest way to have a play with SimTools without hardware is to use the 2DOF simulator: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/simulating-a-2dof-simulator.278/

The demo version of SimTools only works with the fully functional plugin for Live For Speed.

Licensing and SimTools functionality details are here: https://simtools.us/license/

And if you need to contact Dustin (aka @yobuddy), the SimTools dev, about SimTools, development or licensing then you can do so here: https://simtools.us/contact-us/

There is a programmers thread section where you can start your own thread, ask questions or show off your work: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/miscellaneous.63/

I and others would be really interested in your progress and your Mars driving sim, with motion would i would be real blast.

Thanks noorbeast and yobuddy. These links should get me into r&d land pretty quickly :) Icy7CE has already developed a plugin for it here:
    https://www.xsimulator.net/community/marketplace/red-rover-plugin.221/

I'm looking into how to make this more official, ie building a proper telemetry data output from the simulator so that it's more reliable and compatible. Thanks for the welcome and great starter info!

    Hi,
I've been a VR fan since hearing about the Oculus Rift shortly after their kickstarter. I've been a casual/occasional gamer since then but about a year ago joined OZNZ gaming and have been doing more regular online sim racing, mostly in Assetto Corsa but now a bit of Project Cars 2 and Dirt Rally and have been learning how slow I am.
I used to use a Logitech Driving Force GT wheel and after seeing some youtube videos about arduino based diy shifters and pedals, I made my own one. Then a colleage at work upgraded from a G27 to a G29 and I bought his wheel and pedals minus the pedal case which he'd lost and the shifter which he wanted to keep since the G29 didn't come with a shifter and I already had my diy shifter. Since then I've upgraded the brake to a load cell brake and have experimented with adding rumble motors to the brake and accelerator. The load cell brake is good but I decided I don't like the rumble motors so don't use them.
I like making stuff and particularly enjoy the combination of a bit of coding, electronics, mechanical engineering, metal work and wood work that these arduino based sim racing projects involve and the fact that they're practical things that I regularly use. A couple of the guys at OZNZ gaming got Next Level Racing V2 motion platforms which got me thinking and researching what was possible with diy motion rigs. Thinking about the physics, I had the idea that a high pivot point might improve the simulation of g-forces since the initial g-force felt when the seat starts to move would be in the same direction as the g-force you'd experience with the seat tilted over. I did some searching on here and found tahustvedt's motion rig based on the same idea https://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/new-lighter-2dof-simulator.11118/ and more recently Bruceaust's build https://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/2-dof-sim-v3-plus-wmr-vr-headset.13012/ .
Right now I've got to finish a fish tank cabinet for my partner before I start designing and building my own motion rig (otherwise I'd never get the cabinet done and I've been saying I'd do it for a while...). But I've been thinking about the design and am looking forward to starting the project. I'll start a build thread when I have something to show.

Hey guys, Tim checking in from New Zealand here. Currently have a Next Level Motion V3 which is decent but looking to take it up a notch with a dbox style setup bolted to the corners of my Simlab P1. A reddit user recently posted an option from China that has pretty decent specs from PT Actuator so doing some research now about what I need to get together to make it all work.

I'm reasonably technical but no electrical or engineering background so will be looking for options that are least likely to result in electrocution!

    Welcome @Tim Palmgren.

You can even build your own actuators and you will likely find @Michael Hensen's D-Box inspired build thread of interest: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/diy-d-box-style-for-vr-3-dof.11524/

But there are also many other design options. So do some research and planning, the community here can help you out as you formulate your ideas about what you want to build and even where you can source parts from.
