    Hi,

I'm Jarrad and I'm based in Canberra, Aus.

Just joined today as I'm starting to plan for building a 3DOF racing sim, and still doing some early research. My DIY experience is fairly limited (particularly in the electronics and coding space), but seeing a lot of other DIY attempts has inspired me to try my own.

Some questions I'm still trying to figure out for myself are whether I should try and build a small-scale test sim with little servo motors before I start on a full-scale one (I haven't been able to find much guidance on doing this for a 3DOF sim yet) and whether I can get away with building my first full-scale sim out of timber instead of metal (I'm more comfortable working with timber, but realise it might not have the required rigidity for the project).

Still reading through the FAQs to try and get a better sense of the full process, but looking forward to getting started.

    Let's see how it goes!

    Cheers

    Welcome @Jarrad.

Starting off small, testing out ideas and building news skills is a great way to start, particularly if you aspire to build a Stewart platform as your first project.

You will also find plenty of helpful information in the FAQs, particularly the Design section: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/

Including how to build RC powered rigs, with the required Arduino code: https://xsimulator.net/community/faq/build-a-working-model-to-test-your-design-ideas.216/

Use the Enhanced Google Search on the Recent page to find specific types of projects or topics.

If something sounds odd then look it up in the glossary: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/glossary-of-acronyms-and-names.66/

Once you have some project ideas and preliminary build ideas in mind please bounce your plans and shopping list off members, before jumping down what can be an expensive rabbit hole, if you get it wrong.

When you are ready please start your own project thread here, ask any questions you have there and detail your project progress: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

    Good luck with your project.

Hi, I'm new to Motion Sim, I'm a HEAVY VR user, but frankly speaking, I have no idea where to start.
I watched and read hundreds of videos and reviews, but I'm still confused and I don't know which could be the correct choice for my needs, I usually do Racing (Assetto Corsa, Project Cars 2, Dirt Rally 2.0 and so on), Flying Sim (DCS, War Thunder, IL-2 Sturmovik, Elite Dangerous, Star Wars Squadrons and so on), ETS2..., well most everything what concerns VR (but also Flat Games).
I would consider my budget "affordable", I'm not willing to spend 10k euros for a Motion Sim, sure not the less expensive as well (I'm considering a DOF Reality P3 actually), but I'm a noob as said and joined for suggestions (and help if I can).
    Thanks

    Welcome @comatrix.

Time spent researching is time well spent.

If you are just interested in commercial rigs then have a good look through the Commercial thread section, see what experiences members have had, and if you have questions then hopefully someone who owns a particular commercial rig can give you an honest perspective: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/commercial-simulators-and-peripherie.52/

If you are also considering building a rig, which will perform as well but cost less, yet take some time to plan and build, then have a poke around in the DIY thread for some inspiration and realistic understanding of what it takes: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

We have an active and knowledgeable community here, who freely share their time and expertise, but make sure you do some research first, have a good look in the FAQs before firing off a whole range of basic questions, as the answers to those are already likely to be documented: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/

When it comes to VR and motion speed and precision of movement is far more important than large axis range. It is also one of the most compelling VR experiences you can have, when done right.

    Happy exploring!

    Hi All,
Hendrik from South Africa. I have too many hobbies, which means I don't spend enough time on the important ones. I started building the motion part of my rig last Saturday ... almost to the day THREE YEARS after my PT Actuator 5DOF kit was delivered to my house. I have some really awesome hardware that has been sitting in the cupboard for way too long (Simucube 2 Ultimate, Heusinkveld Ultimate+ pedals, one new Simucube active pedal, SIMXPERIENCE GS-5 G-Seat and G-Belt, etc.)
Other hobbies inlcude woodworking, 3D printing (incl. Formlabs Fuse1 SLS printers and the Desktop Metal Studio 2 system), HAAS Super MiniMill 2, etc. so I'm really in a position to build an awesome rig.

    Hello,

My name is Mike and i live in the Netherlands. Playing a lot of sims like ETS2 and FS22. But also Dirt 2 and Asseto Corsa. I build in the past several controllers and button boxes for ETS2 and FS22. Now is my next step to build a full frame 2 dof + traction loss. My new steeringwheel, Thrustmaster t300 is coming my way. I have a lot of questions and i am starting to read the FAQ.

    Regards Mike

Hello friends! My name is Igor, I'm from Ukraine. We are at war. But if you think only about war and do nothing, you can go crazy. My son is growing up, he is fond of programming and loves racing. A few years ago, I registered on this site and started building a flight simulator cockpit, but was forced to freeze my project. Now I decided to renew it and connect my son, his name is Michael. Now we want to continue together the project that I started.

Hi all! My name is Jon, I live in rural Kansas. Currently have a non-motion sim with a GT lite chair, MOZA direct drive wheel and pedals (with clutch), and TH8 shifter (not a huge fan), and heavy spec PC for VR sim. I've been eyeing a 3DOF from DOFreality since before I even got my sim, intending to drop all those $$$, but not that I see these setups I'm itching to try my hand at making my own (and probably opening up a whole new ball of tinkering wax). Old hand at car work, decent at joining metal together (currently building custom chassis car, mid/rear engine LS4 car with C5 corvette front). Loving what I see here so far, hope to join in the fun!

Purchase for solder equipment, 3d printer, learning micro/engine controllers, 230V vs 12V, 250mA vs 20A, 100Ω vs 10kΩ, PSU modifications, electric motor performance studying etc has begun, and hopefully by spring I have at least something working. Excited! (-:

Hey everybody! My name is Chris, and I am from Oregon. Long time simmer, that recently completed my instrument rating for my private pilot license. Now that I have a little more time on my hands, I am ready to take my simming to the next level. Started taking a look at some motion simulators, and decided that I want to DIY this instead of throwing cash at some business.

After searching for a bit, I came to here, and am starting to research what I want, how I want to build it, and what required hardware is needed. Looking forward to learning as much as I can and also try not to piss off the wife too much with another expensive hobby :D

Hello, this is Chris, I'm in the process of purchasing the stuff I need (or, at least I think I do) for a 2DOF sim. Will use it in racing sims such as RFactor2, AC/ACC and also Dirt2.0 (plus the upcoming WRC game I suppose). I have some general questions which I hope I could get answered such as "how can I combine several worm-gear motors to increase the power" (as the lower power ones can be bought quite cheap - 4x 120W motors cost me about as much as a single 250W unit) - I got at least basic skills in metalwork, electronics/arduino programming and also CAD, so I'm building that thing from scratch using steel rectangular/round tubes, other than the seat. Will publish schematics if this turns out something that other people are interested in as well!
