    Good morning everyone!
I came across this forum while looking for a solution to my problem - a platform for calibrating the measurement module for monitoring large objects during transport. The device has already passed the PoC phase and has received positive feedback from the first user. The measurement system transmits pitch, roll, and rotation data via WiFi to the remote Operator panel, which monitors the position and manually corrects deviations through an extensive hydraulic system. The controlled objects weigh from 5 to 800 tons. The problem I want to solve is the stable movement of the measuring head in 3D to calibrate and confirm the accuracy of the expected measurements (0.05 deg in the displacement range of +/-1.5 deg, relative to zero +/-10 deg). Such devices are available for +$10k. I hope my experience and electronic knowledge will allow me to build a sufficiently precise moving measuring platform with a smaller budget!

    Gentlemen,

I am Rick from Dallas Tx. I have been kicking around the motion sim project for 20 years or so and have previously built an 8ft x 4ft x 5ft simulator with 2 axes. This was before VR. When VR became available, I abandoned that project in favor of a VR model.

Recently, I found some new blogs about 6DOF stewart platforms using 750W AC servos and drives. I went ahead and ordered 6 of these, so now I will need to do some fabrication. I would like to 3d CAD the design to play with different geometries. If anyone can point me to some engineering data on the geometry calculations for a stewart platform, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    Rick

    Welcome @Rick Bickle.

Any 6DOF is an ambitious project. So doing some research before getting in too deep is time well spent.

Bounce your plans and shopping list off members before jumping too far down what can be an expensive rabbit hole, if you get it wrong.

Use the Search on the Recent page to find the latest member 6DOF projects, as there have been many refinements to how members build 6DOF rigs.

You will also find plenty of helpful information in the FAQs, including a section on 6DOF rigs, along with design considerations: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/

If something sounds odd then look it up in the glossary: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/glossary-of-acronyms-and-names.66/

When you are ready please start your own project thread here and detail your project, so members can give support and advice where possible: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

    Good luck with your project.

Hello. Long time reader here (on and off) and first time poster. After years of wanting to build a 6dof simulator, I am finally ready to at least attempt a start. I have been looking through the FAQ, but still have lots of questions and options to consider. I am assuming that a build thread will be a more appropriate place to put the plans and questions, so that will be my next step. Thank you everyone for a great forum with lots of valuable information. My only problem so far is wading through all of the information to find the specific nugget that will help.

    Thanks all!
    Chad

Thank you noorbeast. Definitely need more research, but also looking forward to assembling an actuator to test.

    Hello,

I like to build my own 3-DOF. This Account is new, but I read a lot in the DIY area.

Last of my projekts was a DIY Button Box for ACC.

    Thanks

    any one from India,
I want to make a belt drive ffb steering wheel using my1016 24v 350w, I thought of going with hoverbord hub motor but odesc and odrive are not available in india or at price in 3 digit.
Any one with same idea like me, reply me.
    will help each other

    Hi everyone!

This is Xin from China and I'm currently studying in aircraft maintenance + avionics in Canada. I'm planning to build up a 6DOF platform for my college. I hope that platform could be used in campus to show students how a plane can pitch/roll/yaw, the relationship between the flight control and the plane's attitude, and how an instrument responses with the attutide of a plane.

I will do my research and learn from all you guys.

    Thanks!

    Xin

    Hello,

My name is Thierry, I am French and I am 66 years old. I recently bought a first generation 2 DOF Pro Simu which I find really good, after some problems getting it to run with Simtools 2.6 (license and plugin provided by the seller), I am quite happy with it. result. I play in VR with a pimax 8KX on Assetto Corsa, AMS 2 and DIRT 2 (Verins doesn't work in VR but I will find the problem) and I would like to get into DCS and FS2020 a bit to try and see if I like it.

Thanks for reading, see you soon :)

Hello everyone, I am very happy to join your community :)
I am Arth, 25, from France so my english may seem clumsy. I have a big (and maybie completely stupid) arcade car game/roller coaster/flight simulator project, even though i'm a complete beginner in engineering ahaha, but i'm lucky to have good support. Can't wait to explore the forum and and ask you lots of questions.

    Hello everybody, new member here,

I've been following SimTools and the forum for a while, as I pretend one day (time permiting) start my journey in a DIY simulator. So I'm glad to join, learn and contribute (when possible)

My background is MSc Mechanical Engineering, and I did a long career in automotive industry, both as a mechanic, designer, engineering and lately manager. Some years ago I jumped to a smaller company doing industrial gearboxes, where I did learn a lot of technicalities on gears.

But more importantantly for simulation, I jumped 10 years ago as general manager of a Swiss SME making top notch Motion Control Devices. I managed the Servomotors facility in Spain where, aside of serbvral types of servos, we developed high end coreless (Or better, slotless) rotary motors up to size 190 (80 Nm) and linear forcers too. Our customers range from simple automation to semiconductor lithography makers, and our slotless motors are especially successful in mobile robotics and flight simulators.

A slotless servomotor, though difficult to manufacture in big size, offers zero cogging torque and high peak torque (around 7 times nominal) so they are excellent to be controlled by torque loop (they are more stable, as cogging does not perturbate the torque control loop, inherently unstable ) in feed-back flight simulator controls. Won't mention the customers here, but we have some big simulation players as customers, and we have also made some kits for some F1 Teams, for wheel force-feedback motors.

With this background, despite my only amateur level at Electronics, and approaching retirement, is not surprising that I'm considering building my own simulator.

I pretend to start small, probably with simple 2-dof platform attached to AssetoCorsaCompetizione, driven by a couple of axial flux DC motors, easier to drive.

But as I have some design of ball screw actuators (With slotless motors directly integrated with no coupling) that will provide 150-250 mm stroke and 2 m/s speed, I don't discard moving forward to a 6 dof Stewart platforms like the ones I've seen with our customers.

I will therefore start with FAQs and try to absorb as much as possible from this forum, and I won't hesitate to ask questions to those really seasoned sim-builders i have seen that frequent this place.

Then I'll go for a license of SimTools and maybe try to build only a scale model to start with and understand those complex systems.

Needless to say that I will contribute if I'm asked share some infos regarding servomotors and gearboxes. After all, Open philosophy is about sharing, and we all learn here.

Thanks all, for sharing all your knowledge.
