    My Motion Simulator:
    SimAxe
    Hello Everyone,

I'm eager to get started creating my own DIY setup for racing games like Assetto Corsa and iRacing as I'm fresh to the realm of motion simulators. I've been reading a lot of material and have found a lot of knowledge, but the sheer number of possibilities and technical intricacies is overwhelming. I'm hoping that the knowledgeable people here can point me in the correct direction with their recommendations and opinions.

My major objective is to develop a motion simulator that can offer an affordable, realistic racing experience. I want to make sure I'm investing in the correct parts and design, but I'm not scared to get my hands filthy in some do-it-yourself projects.

I have the following specific queries:

Motion Platforms: What advantages and disadvantages exist between 2DOF and 3DOF systems? Is 3DOF worth the additional expense and complexity, or is 2DOF adequate for a realistic experience?

Actuators and Motors: Is there a source for reasonably priced, dependable actuators or motors that would be appropriate for do-it-yourself projects? I'm not sure which model to pick because I've seen conflicting reviews on several of them.

Control Systems: Which method is most effective for regulating motion? I've read that ccsp SimTools or Arduino can be used, but I'm not sure which is easier for a novice to use.

Any advice on the materials and design of frames? I want to make sure it's reasonably simple to construct while also being strong and safe.

I'd like your professional advice on the following questions:

Suggestions for Motors and Controllers: Which motor and controller combinations work best for a 3DOF or 6DOF setup? Something that strikes a compromise between power and precision without going over budget really piques my interest.

Frame Design: Is it better to create a new frame from the ground up or should I make modifications to my current one? For more intricate configurations, which materials and design strategies have you found to be the most reliable and long-lasting?

Software Compatibility: Should I continue using SimTools after the update, or are there other programs that work better with 3DOF or 6DOF rigs?

VR Integration: I'd really like to enable complete VR compatibility for the simulator. How can I ensure a seamless integration with the least amount of motion sickness?

    Thank you in advance.

    Welcome @smith_john.

Many of us were similarly driven by such enthusiasm, drawing inspiration from the many awesome DIY member projects here, with members freely giving of their time and expertise to translate our dreams into reality.

For most of your questions the realistic answer is 'it depends', and what it depends on is many factors, budget, existing tools and skills, time availability, location in the world, ease of access and cost of parts, space, and personal preference and goals.

The best I can offer is that time spent researching and clarifying your project is time well spent, and likely to save you time, money and frustration.

You will find plenty of helpful information in the FAQs to get you started: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/

The FAQs have a Design section: https://xsimulator.net/community/faq/design-considerations-resources.24/category

Which includes tools like SimCalc (2DOF), which will help get your head around the tradeoff in design Vs physics. Motor choice is intimately linked to design and desired performance.

Additionally use the Search function on the Recent page to find similar projects of interest, following in the footsteps of others who have successful builds is much easier and likely cheaper that forging a brand new path: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/find-new/posts?recent=1

If something sounds odd then look it up in the glossary: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/glossary-of-acronyms-and-names.66/

When you are ready please start your own project thread here, ask any questions you have there and detail your project progress: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

    Good luck with your project.
