so made the 400km drive up to my in laws place to start the build last couple days. Cut up my old sim and started the new design of the top, my father is law is a marine engineer so his workplace is perfect to make the sim. Pictures speak louder than words so here is some I took of the weekends progress. We actually added a camera mount from the oculus rift at the very front at the end but I didn't take a photo unfortunately. Anyway im back home now and in a couple weeks ill drive back up to carry it on and see how we go. We worked out the balance point at the end of the day too so its all set to start the next layer next time

(had to blur out some questionable material on the walls of his workplace haha)

Great start @Boomslangnz, I will look forward to following your build.

Just some advance warning, the Rift camera on the rig is fine for gentle flight simming but can't cope with the sort of motion and vibration most of us run for racing and combat flight sims, you are better off having it placed off the rig.

No thanks that's good to know. I'll remove the camera bar off the rig

@noorbeast how do you find the linear bearing rail? Would a longer one maybe work for surge sliding the top layer forward and back? I've tried looking at weight they can handle etc but it seems to be measure in c (kgf) which doesn't make sense to me lol

    They are rated by force.

Mine support the controls just fine, but are very expensive. I got them on sale and snapped them up.

As an alternative, in terms of cost and ease of use. you may want to have a look at the open source linear rails that were originally funded via Kickstarter in 2012: http://openbuildspartstore.com/v-slot/?sort=bestselling

Does anyone have a pic of how you mounted worm gear drives up close?

Just working out best way now.

And it's best to have about 30 degree angle on rods and 15 degrees out right?

Mine are mounted to aluminum like this, but they now have an additional long metal plate inside with 2 captive nuts for further reinforcing, since I changed to 60:1 gearboxes: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/dx-racer-compact-simulator.5866/page-2#post-62706

I use a cross brace as well between the motors: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/dx-racer-compact-simulator.5866/page-7#post-67552

The motors and our rigs do exert significant forces, so however you decide to mount the motors make them beefy, so they can stand the abuse without flexing.

@bsft I've seen you say to setup 30 degree back and 15 degree out so I've done the calculations but it ends up being quite wide, is this still your recommendation?

My rig is 500mm wide in total at the moment but to achieve 15 degree angle out on rods I need to make the layer below 980mm wide. And from behind my seat to motors has to be 658mm. Rod arms will end up being 1316mm long

15 deg back and 15 deg out to side minimum
@eaorobbie , can you advise further please?

Hopefully he replies asap as we are gonna start building next frame today

@bsft We opened up my 50:1 motor from motion dynamics yesterday and internals are all plastic. Is this normal? I was under the impression that 50:1 and 60:1 had metal internals. Perhaps they have changed now.

My 60:1s are definately metal internals: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/dx-racer-compact-simulator.5866/page-5#post-65721

You may want to follow up with Motion Dynamics.

Thanks @noorbeast appreciate your help throughout!

So made another trip up to my father in law and did some more work over the weekend. Swapped a motor to left hand, made up some rod arms, made some progress on the next frame level etc etc again, pictures show what we did :) Rods are at angles of exactly 30 degrees back and 15 degrees out and hes going to go over and weld everything up better at the very end

Nice progress and thanks for the photos. I have to say that is one well equipped workshop!

You may want to consider gussets on the corners where the motors are, to help prevent flex. These motors can exert significant force.

Yep its not really finished yet so we will be strengthing it all up. Still to add traction loss to it all yet so more plates to go on it anyway. And yes, their workshop is awesome for this. Has everything you need really

    Nice progress @Boomslangnz :thumbs

I only think that maybe it would be better that uni-joint (cardan) was turned up-side down, so that the joint knuckle is closer to the seat base and not the ground like it is now. You could get better center of gravity and angle movement.

It's just something I've noticed, everything is welded already and it's hard to do some adjustments now so just keep doing your job :thumbs

It probably won't be a big deal, we will wait to see how it moves.. Those adjustable motor levers are nice detail. And as @noorbeast pointed out, those motor brackets don't seem very convincing, they could flex and we certainly don't want that.

Actually it might be easy to turn the uni joint around as its not actually welded down anywhere so far. Has screws down onto plates which are welded so could possibly turn it upside down easily and yes the motor brackets are going to have more welding and strengthened. It's just being done later
