What with the Au dollar going down against the US dollar the CV1 delivered is AU$600 more than I paid for the DK2!

For those who are interested the Palmer Reddit AMA starts in 25 minutes: https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/new/

In some ways it is unfortunate that anger over price is likely to overshadow opportunities to get technical information, given the sentiments expressed on the Oculus Facebook page and Reddit /r/oculus.

I cheered myself up a bit by comparing another product I could not afford against the Rift.

Back in 1977 the Atari 2600 was US$199.

In today's money that is US$802

Makes the Rift look a bit of a bargain really :) (If launched in 1977 it would be US$148)

Look how far we have come since then for the price point!

(Shame today's salaries still make it expensive!)

It is now 25 minutes into the AMA and Palmer has not made one comment. Questions about price are getting down voted as there are so many, but that means clarification around misleading customers, outrageous shipping costs, taxes and the like may not get clarified.

Palmer got stuck responding to a 25 question post that was up voted but then deleted by mods, as muti questions are against the AMA rules. If you are interested in Palmers comments it is easiest to check them via his user name and hit the Context button to know what he is responding to, if it is not clear: https://www.reddit.com/user/palmerluckey/

Thanks for the responses about VR and motion rigs. I'll pay attention to building it stable and where I mount the camera.

A giant haptic chair sounds about right.

This made me chuckle. Hitler reacts to Oculus Pricing! Sounds a bit like the anger over at Reddit!

It took one hour to reach May and then over a day to reach June - Orders are certainly slowing down..

I reckon that a lot of the orders were made because you can cancel at anytime with no loss. I think the closer it gets to March the more canceled orders there will be thus bumping up the rest. There is already people on Reddit asking how to cancel.

It will be interesting to see if many will jump ship to the Vive when pre-orders are available in Feb. If the Vive deal was OK, I would do it if not for the Vive current motion sim unfriendly tracking system. Edit: Yes @noorbeast I know it could track a motion rig and use software to cancel out the unwanted motion - but who knows if, or when that will ever be available. The Rift will work straight out of the box with all currently used software.

@SeatTime what do you mean by the "Vive motion sim unfriendly tracking system"?

As far as I am aware it is unknown if motion cancellation is possible with the Vive. In fact I have not seen a report of Vive being used with a motion sim.

If it is not natively supported then motion cancellation may well be possible to implement via Lighthouse, which can track with sub mm accuracy, the question I would have is at what speed. I suspect that the same vibration isolation challenges would apply if you mounted Lighthouse sensors to a motion rig, but at least they are wireless.

I am not sure what makes the Vive motion sim unfriendly, at worst it would be on par with the Rift, at best there may be some new opportunities for motion cancellation. Until someone gets their hands on one it is an unknown.

I guess it comes down to the known and unknown, I know I can get the Rift to work on my rig, I don't know if the Vive will work with my rig - although I would guess a internally spinning laser in the 'lighthouse' would not like to be thrown around...:think

The Lighthouse base stations will need to remain stationary on your wall / tripods /etc.

Most of the benefits of Lighthouse are lost on a sim, though. In confined area of movement, the accuracy will be pretty much identical to the Rift. I think either will work pretty much the same.

All that said, I'm getting both. I already have 2 DK1s, a DK2, and two GearVRs. Plenty of room for both the Vive and the Rift.

For stand-up gaming, that's where the Vive is really going to shine. The built in camera for obstacle detection, I can't begin to describe how cool that's gonna be.

Same here, DK1, DK2 and GearVR, I am getting and testing both the CV1 Rift and Vive.

Really we are just speculating about the Vive until we get it. Some claim Lighthouse will track even when shaken, but who knows until we get to test it: https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/3aic2n/what_is_the_minimum_distance_to_track_for/csdk483

I suspect that the Rift and Vive will each have their own pros and cons, but for me the Vive and Lighthouse are more interesting at the moment simply because we have not yet got to experiment with them, and that is my area of interest.
