Says who? Oculus? Did we have an external confirmation of that. I did not look out for it. So I have no clue. I do agree they spend a lot of money into it. I just keep the same skeptical about Half-Dome than I do about Pimax 8K. It is just that with Pimax, I can (maybe one day) verify by miself. Oculus, I cannot.

You will get to verify Oculus yourself, as R&D feeds into the Gen 2 consumer Rift. Same with Pimax. The unknown question is the amount of time between the releases and experiential quality difference. My guess is that the best case scenario for the fully completed and refined Pimax may will spill into early 2019 and the Gen 2 Rift is possibly the end of 2019-2020.

It's definitely an interesting world and it feels like things are slow as molasses. The new Nvidia cards (1180/2080) have a part outline and pad set that looks like it fits the new VirtualLink USB-C alt-mode connector on them. Lots of speculation around the web on the pcb images linked, but the output connector lineup argues against this being a Quadro - there's an HDMI and Quadros now are only DP, there is what looks like VirtualLink, and the connector on the top is backwards if it was NVLink though it isn't SLI either.

    https://videocardz.com/76953/nvidia-geforce-gtx-2080-1180-pcb-has-been-leaked

We can't know for certain until they announce and confirm. But if it is VirtualLink on the output connector lineup, we are that much closer to next gen resolutions.

And if you look at the VirtualLink spec, it's a monster:

    https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/...t-generation-vr-headsets-to-pcs-other-devices
https://multimonitorcomputer.com/solved/displayport-high-bit-rate-3-hbr3.php < FOUR of these in VirtualLink

If you check that second link on the HBR3 display port (of which there are FOUR in VirtualLink), each one can do 4096 x 2160 (4K) up to 120 frames per second. I only have two eyes, so that other bandwidth could be used to bring stereo vision at high resolution back down to the computer for essentially AR style fun.

If the other connector is a high bandwidth connection that lets cards pair up for one per eye, it will be a new day for high res VR. Makes my danglies get all tingly! I wouldn't even care if it took two 1180/2080 cards to run that.

On the headset front, if you look at the partners on VirtualLink, it's Nvidia, Valve, AMD, Oculus, and Microsoft. I don't know if HTC not being listed means anything since the Vive is largely a Valve design. But the quiet for now may just be the calm before the storm.

VR is already stunning but I can't even begin to imagine 4K per eye at 120 FPS. I think it's coming. VR is being adopted like gangbusters in the training/high tech world as well as other deep pocket commercial activities. I suspect that what we could see is that be the high-priced driver for consumer VR instead of porn as it has been for VCRs, DVDs, and so on. But there is demand there and I think the VirtualLink partners see the potential.

And who knows what here is correct and what isn't? The VirtualLink spec is what it is, though. And those are images of an Nvidia board. And it's kind of quiet in the headset world for now.

    I'm hopeful. :cheers

I think these guys are already under a NDA , so won't expect much info out of the meetup - although they are familiar with the last version of the Pimax 8K - so at least can give some good feedback to Pimax.

Generally positive first hand user reviews out of the Berlin backer meeting, and the Pimax 8K M2 and 5K NDA will be lifted on 16th September.

I know they still have to ship it . But I must admit I'm excited after watching the comments. Cannot wait :D - will likely stay with the 8K as I have a AORUS 1080 TI and did order the 8KX.

I could get it before Christmas? Man, I am not ready. A new video card will be needed, htc base station 2.0 seams out of order, my sim is not ready, this is chaos! Oh, well. Let's try to solve one problem at a time.

Looks like it’s a non runner for xplane and dcs due to a lack of asynchronous reprojection or ASW equivalent. I have to question them releasing this without their brainwarp software. I wonder is it a lack of programming skill or is it previous patents from valve and Oculus that are preventing them from coding a solution.

Pimax is already emailing early backers about pending shipping, and giving 8K backers the option to choose the 5K+ with $100 accessory credits: https://old.reddit.com/r/Pimax/comments/9gsoog/guys_just_received_email_telling_me_they_are/

This is the Pimax email to watch for:

    Hi xxxxx ,

We are about to ship your Pimax headset!

Please double check the shipping details: Xxxxxx

Will you keep 8K or switch to 5K+?

You may refer to the very in-depth reviews by our testers to make your decision:

    Mixed Reality TV | https://www.youtube.com/mixedrealitytv | German/English SweViver | https://www.youtube.com/sweviver | English VoodooDE | https://www.youtube.com/c/VoodooDE_PCGaming | German

Also, would love to know what are the accessories you'd like to add with the $100 extra pledge, if you plan to switch to 5K+

Feel free to let me know for any question!

So the decision point is imminent for 8K backers and it is a tough choice, with only reviews to guide us. Here is the latest side by side through the lens comparison of the 8K and 5K+ with supersampling cranked up in PiTool and SteamVR:
