I think I've got the virus!!
Having built the first rig and enjoying it a lot with iRacing (skippies) , I am thinking of building me a aluminum frame 30/30, Complete moving so seat up to the pedals.. with motors in the back.. and thus doing justice to the JRK and gear worms.. I have to tome down my settings otherwise all MDF platform torques :) , and with the upcoming Oculus rift (august) I want a 'better' rig..

Learn from previous mistakes and build a cleaner rig is my goal, Timeframe.. :) Start now and design something so I know what to order in aluminum extrusions

    Yep ya have the bug.

    Warning Sim Building is Addictive.:cheers

With the new build be very careful on setting the balance point, needs to be just right or motors will work too hard.
When finding the balance point take note to include all accessories on the rig and you so the cg point you find is correct, if not by adding a couple of kgs forward or behind the cg , by adding an accessory you forgot will cause the rig to become unbalanced which is not a good thing, means motor will not have the same speed and reaction timing going forwards and backwards because of the unbalanced weight. Even changing driver weight and size affects everything.

So the best thing would be that I could slide and lock the whole upper deck.
So that my son and I can both use it in it's full capacity by sliding the upper deck to the right balance point, as I know he has a bit different seating position..

    I'll think about it!!

Started sourcing for a new parts.. Pivot is ordered (from a Peugeot 404 pickup) .. Now a correct universal joint instead of a homokenetic thingy

And for now I start with the playseat seat but I guess in time I will want to put on a proper racing seat, with belts etc :)

    Damn... lovely but expensive virus

Yes sliding(moveable upper deck) will help, keep the sim moving at it optimum level of response.
Spot on, joyride uses this concept in their rigs.

Might be an expensive hobby but its a world of fun, can always sell the rig to a mate for cost of parts, I have found its the quickest way to fund the next build.
I don't build them to make money like most do, just the enjoyment of building it is enough payment for me.
And the excitement on the new owners face when I deliver it , is priceless.

Done that already with a previous build. I incorporated a seat rails to move balance point from seat mover to full race frame. It worked well.
I will do another style like this with desk racer design some day.

    Hi All, back in redesign/rebuild!

Still building a full platform moving rig but from Aluminium bars and PVC pipes (too keep the weight in proportion).. But now I will have the motors at the back grabbing at 'just above' shoulderheight. As I have bought a new raceseat (LTEC), which has a shell inside, I want to attach it directly to the seat instead having a bar standing upright. I will have the pedals on a slide instead of the chair, so the chair is fixed.

But how wide should it be at shoulder height.. At the base it will be 75cm but how much width to I need at the shoulder?! any suggestions??

That depends on the length of your levers at the motors and how much pitch and body roll you want. Most people seem to have a bar of approximately 40cm across the shoulders. At least that's what I think seems to work.

I plan to have a bar with 2 or 3 different fixing points so I can adjust the points where the top of the bars mount.

I set my top width depending on the angle of the connecting rods , which I like to set at 5-10deg towards the centre. About 455mm on my frame that has the motor levers at 640mm from centre to centre.
    Hope that helps.

Nice! Looking forward to seeing the new design and how it compares to your current one.

My Top mount is 10" wide at the shoulders, Maybe make it 11" with the added nuts to prevent the rod ends from Binding.

Only one question @RacingMat , what if my JRKS are not on COM4 and COM6? What do I do then?

yes, I don't understand... Simtools Game Engine let you choose the Comport you like in the Interface Settings Panel

Would a slight change of wording add clarity and reconcile the contributions of @RacingMat and @bsft, such as:

Refer to Eaorobbie's post here for step by step startup :)

For a 2DOF, you need 2 JRK 12v12 boards. Each JRK drives its own actuator
    • JRK1 will be connected to a com port, such as COM4
    • SimTools "interface 1" sends the information for axis 1 to the connected com port
    • JRK1 sends commands of axis 1 to actuator 1.

    • JRK1 will be connected to a com port, such as COM6
    • SimTools "interface 2" sends the information for axis 2 to the connected com port
    • JRK2 sends commands of axis 2 to actuator 2
For further information regarding com ports see here: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/how-to-change-the-com-port.36/

@RacingMat , @noorbeast , I already wrote a document outlining how to set up JRKS, including wording
    "
For interface one, put in which ever jrk, be it com7, com 1, com 5 , what ever.

Click SAVE, and repeat process in interface 2
    "
It states that whatever your JRKS are in the comport list , use those numbers, not change the comports to suit a FAQ document that is incorrect in its wording.
there is no need to change the comports, got it?!?!?!

If this document is not suitable then go ahead and write another then

awesome @eaorobbie That JRK setup guide is exactly what im looking for. I played around at my house with JRK software and simtools with a little slot car 12v motor today and was getting really confused with all the settings etc so this will be awesome for when I wire up my simulator come end of this month. I still don't understand the PID and what it actually does but ill try read up somewhere on what it does. Is that guide written up anywhere in pdf form or anything?
