You uncheck the box when you want to enter a value manually: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/set-base-tuning-motion-values-in-the-tuning-center.122/

Sometimes you do that to further refine the value, others, like simulating gear change kick, you want a lower Min value than the Max value, so those value entries need to be done manually: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/snappy-gear-change-motion.121/

It depends if you use traditional pots or Hall sensors: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/how-to-choose-potentiometer.238/

Personally I use Hall sensors as they can be connected directly to the motor shaft using a flexible coupling, won't break if over rotated by a runaway motor and provide excellent tracking resolution.

Here are member approaches to mounting, connecting and protecting pots: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/how-to-connect-protect-a-potentiometer.13/

There are various ways to use MMs, depending on how much power they are expected to handle: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/motor-driver-for-arduino-compatible-controller.11/category
